Entrepreneurial philanthropy

4 01 2008

In November 2007, Kauffman Foundation President and CEO Carl Schramm addressed the 2007 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year conference. He spoke about entrepreneurial philanthropy – an approach the Foundation strives to emulate, and one that is of particular interest to the growing number of business leaders who want to inspire and mentor the next generation of entrepreneurs.  A video of his speech is available on the Kauffman Foundation website.

The American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research has published a report discussing the rise of a new class of entrepreneurial philanthropists in the US and which is redefining what counts as philanthropy.  In the report Entrepreneurial Philanthropy in the DevelopingWorld: A New Face for America, a Challenge to Foreign Aid, Mauro De Lorenzo and Apoorva Shah note that philanthropy is usually considered a form of humanitarianism, not a technique of international development and far less a driver of economic growth.  However, there is an increasing trend is for private philanthropists to be on the cutting edge of development practice.
